Belts and Hoses

TIMING BELT

Many of today’s engines are known as timing belt-driven, interference engines. What this means is that the timing belt keeps the valvetrain synchronized with the pistons. While the piston is reaching the top of its travel in the cylinder, the valves are opening and closing at precisely the right time, so as not to interfere with the piston. Each manufacturer sets a recommended interval for the replacement of the timing belt and the related components. When this mileage interval is exceeded, the timing belt can become weak and fails, causing major (sometimes catastrophic) engine damage. Having one of our technicians replace your timing belt at the recommended mileage interval will help to prevent this while providing you with peace of mind.

SERPENTINE BELTS

Serpentine belts are the most common belts found today. Your vehicle may be equipped with one or more, and they are responsible for running the engine accessories such as the air conditioning, power steering, and water pump. Periodic replacement is advised as failure of these belts can lead to steering loss, overheating, and loss of power.

COOLANT HOSES

The replacement of the coolant hoses in your vehicle every 30K miles as recommended by the manufacturers is cost-effective insurance against road-side breakdowns. High underhood operating temperatures cause the rubber hoses to age and deteriorate. This wear isn’t always visible, making periodic replacement advised.

Signs of wear:

  • Cracking of the serpentine belt ribs and/or fraying of the belt material.
  • Softening and/or swelling of the hoses, especially at the clamped ends.
